NEWPORT – The museum at the International Tennis Hall of Fame re-opens May 20 with an interactive thrust, following a six-month, $3 million renovation.
The museum has been redesigned to attract tennis fans and casual visitors alike through interactive exhibits and a cohesive narrative shaped around the lives and careers of the 243 Hall of Famers who built the sport, the nonprofit has announced.
To achieve that, the museum collection has been reinterpreted, and all of the galleries have been redesigned to deliver new experiences. Storytelling exhibits and objects including art, fashion, and items of historical relevance beyond the tennis courts are used to enliven the experience.
One gallery, for instance, will feature a hologram of a current, popular tennis star. A “Call the Match” exhibit allows visitors to simulate being in a broadcast booth on match point. And an interactive globe highlights live tennis results from around the world.
The renovation also better showcases the original 1880 architecture of the building, including revealing three fireplaces that previously had been covered up.
The May 20 ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 11:30 a.m.

Beginning May 21, the Hall of Fame will return to its normal hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. In July and August, the museum will stay open until 6 p.m.
