PROVIDENCE – The Dean Hotel on Fountain Street opened its doors to guests for the first time last Friday in what was described as a “soft opening” of the new boutique lodging house.

The hotel has begun taking reservations and opened its lobby, coffee bar and some rooms, said Michael Tavani, a spokesman for The Dean.

Located in a former church shelter that was most recently the Sportsman’s Inn strip club, The Dean has been extensively renovated into a 52-room moderately-priced, design-focused alternative to large chains.

Tavani said work continues at The Dean and a full official opening, including the restaurant and bar, is expected about Feb. 15.

The Dean redevelopment project is being led by Providence native Ari Heckman, CEO of New York real estate and design firm ASH NYC. In addition to Heckman, the hotel’s ownership group also includes Steel Yard co-founder Clay Rockefeller.
