Study: R.I. seventh-most expensive place to tie the knot

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is the seventh-most expensive place to hold a wedding, according to The Knot, a wedding resource.
In Rhode Island, couples can expect to pay an average of $50,266, The Knot said.
The most expensive place? Manhattan in New York City, where weddings average $82,299. Cape Cod in Massachusetts ranked sixth for an average cost of $54,344.
Alaska is the least expensive place to get married, as a wedding there averages $17,361.

The Knot said it surveyed nearly 18,000 brides and grooms married last year for its ninth annual wedding survey.
It found that the average wedding cost has increased by more than $5,500 in the past five years with couples spending an average of $32,641 in 2015. In 2014, the average cost was $31,213.
It named three areas that are specifically driving up wedding costs – reception venue, which increased $1,950 since 2009; ceremony site (+$652) and reception band (+$545). Couples also are using their mobile devices more than ever to plan and search for wedding professionals, as 89 percent of couples report using their smartphone to help plan their wedding, The Knot said.

The survey revealed other trends, such as:

  • Average spent on a wedding dress: $1,469
  • Average marrying age: bride, 29; groom, 31
  • Average number of guests: 139
  • Average number of bridesmaids and groomsmen: five
  • Most popular month to get engaged: December, 16 percent
  • Average length of engagement: 14.5 months
  • Most popular month to get married: October, 17 percent, and September, 15 percent
  • Popular wedding colors: ivory/white (47 percent), blue (39 percent), pink (30 percent), metallics (34 percent), purple (21 percent). The popularity of metallic gold has more than tripled from 7 percent in 2012 to 22 percent in 2015.
  • Percentage of destination weddings: 21 percent (down from 24 percent in 2014)

  1. What venues in the state cost $14k? I’ve been planning a wedding with my fiance and we have about 150 guests and it’s coming total to 15k average including catering, DJ, photobooth etc. I’d love to see what venues people are getting married in for that sort of money.
