John D. Jarrell, president of Materials Science Associates LLC, is clear on how he sees his company’s role in stimulating the state’s economy – by helping startups.

The forensic-analysis company – which specializes in civil cases – recently hired a new lab director to help offer entrepreneurs the space, equipment and research assistance necessary to take their technologies to the next level. There are also plans afoot to open an incubation center.

“We want to help support startup innovators,” Jarrell said.

Founded in 1993, the company has grown exponentially since incorporating several years ago.

Jarrell attributes the company’s continued success to providing a niche service in his areas of expertise and employing people he said are “better at each one of those [areas] than I am.”

“I brought in very smart and very talented people,” he said.

To launch the business, he said, he just had to look around. Jarrell said the connections he formed while studying biology and engineering at Brown University helped inspire him to open his business in Rhode Island – and to stay here.

“I was heavily influenced by my mentors. There are great surgeons here and researchers who are doing great work,” he said. •
