This riding experience electric

Mark DeStefano worked in the boating business for nearly three decades before a friend turned him onto the electric-biking business.

Last July, DeStefano opened the doors to Pedego Rhode Island, an electric-bike shop at 227 Thames St. in Bristol. The Pedego brand is from the California company, but DeStefano is independently owned and is the only carrier of this brand of bikes in Rhode Island.

He rents the bikes out for $15 per hour or $55 per day. His shop is located conveniently near several biking options, including East Bay Bike Path and even Colt State Park. If riders get tired while exploring, DeStefano says, they can just twist the bike’s throttle or tap a pedal-assisted control and let the bike do all the work.

His primary focus is to sell the bikes and he says sales are above projections since he started the business in Bristol.

“The primary reason we rent is to allow people to try the bike that they might be interested in buying,” he said. “But they’re also just fun.” •
