Thundermist gets Champlin grant

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Thundermist Health Center of South County has been awarded a $375,000 Champlin Foundations grant, the nonprofit announced in late January.
Thundermist is one of 203 organizations awarded a grant, which will be used to fund the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the agency’s new state-of-the-art medical and dental building.
“We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this grant,” said Chuck Jones, Thundermist pesident and CEO.
“The new building, supported with this generous grant from the Champlin Foundations, will allow Thundermist of South County to replace a 100-year-old building, as well as serve many more patients. While we already provide medical, dental and behavioral health care to more than 8,000 patients in South County each year, we know there are even more residents who need access to affordable, quality health care,” he said.
Slated to open in early 2015, the facility is being built on the same property as the health center’s existing building at 1 River Street in Wakefield. The new 20,000-square-foot building will feature 17 medical exam rooms, 10 dental “operatories,” and a large community room to accommodate wellness activities and community functions.
Once the new building is open to patients, the existing building will be torn down and replaced with a patient parking lot.
In 2011, Thundermist received a federal grant through the Affordable Care Act from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration for $5 million to help finance the cost of the new building. The agency is embarking on a $1.5 million capital campaign for the building, of which nearly $800,000 has been raised.
