PROVIDENCE – Twin River Management Group is holding a campaign kick-off rally Tuesday to garner support for Question 1 on the November ballot that would allow for construction of a casino and hotel in Tiverton.
The rally will be held at 4 p.m. at India Point Park.
Supporters will discuss the potential for up to 600 casino jobs, 330 construction jobs and increased state revenue from gaming if Question 1 is approved.
John E. Taylor Jr., Twin River chairman, will be joined by Laurie White, Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce president; George Nee, Rhode Island AFL-CIO president; and Michael Sabitoni, Rhode Island Building Trades Council president.
If voters approved the measure, Twin River will be able to transfer Newport Grand operations to the new facility in Tiverton.
Taylor, chairman of Twin River Worldwide Holdings Inc., parent company of the Twin River Management Group, has said the new casino would be located 400 feet from the Massachusetts border – helping Rhode Island compete with Massachusetts casinos such as Plainridge Park in Plainville, Mass. – and is estimated to generate between $47 million and $70 million in revenue for the state.
The legislation provides for the state to get 15.5 percent of table games and 61 percent of slots revenue at both the new Tiverton and existing Twin River locations. Host communities would keep 1 percent of table game revenue and 1.45 percent of slots revenue, the legislation stipulates.
Twin River Casino in Lincoln and Newport Grand are considered “convenience casinos” that draw players from within a 45-minute radius, Taylor has said.
