Town OKs tax treaty with Invenergy

BURRILLVILLE – Maintaining public opposition to the project, the Town Council on Nov. 3 approved a series of financial agreements with Invenergy Thermal Development LLC, a company trying to build a gas-fired power plant in the town.

The deal includes a 20-year tax treaty up to $182 million, a decommissioning agreement to restore the site once the plant expires and $1,500 in compensation for some abutting property owners.

The council says it’s trying to safeguard the town financially should the proposed facility be approved. The project has been a hot-button issue, as environmental and local opposition groups are pushing back against claims the plant is needed to deliver cheaper, more reliable energy.

The R.I. Energy Facility Siting Board is responsible for deciding approval of the project. Originally slated for fall 2016, a decision is not likely until next year. •
