PROVIDENCE – U.S. trade with the 11 other countries participating in the U.S. Trans-Pacific Partnership supported more than 52,000 jobs in Rhode Island in 2013, according to data from the Business Roundtable, an association of CEOs.
“As the United States and 11 other countries seek to conclude the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, it is critical to understand the TPP’s importance for economic growth and jobs in all 50 states,” Tom Linebarger, chairman and CEO of Cummins Inc., and chairman of the Business Roundtable International Engagement Committee, said in a statement. “This agreement holds significant potential to create new opportunities for Rhode Island exporters to sell their goods and services abroad.”
According to the Business Roundtable, 38 percent of Rhode Island goods exported globally went to TPP countries in 2013.
Rhode Island also exported $743 million worth of goods and $369 million worth of services to six TPP countries that are existing U.S. free trade agreement partners – Australia, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Singapore – in 2013, accounting for approximately 35 percent of Rhode Island’s goods exports and approximately 20 percent of its services exports globally.
