PROVIDENCE – Providence has been named the 22nd-best American city for winter travel by Travel + Leisure in its recent list of the top 35 cities for winter vacationing.

The lifestyle- and travel-themed magazine, which compiled its findings from readers’ input, reported the most popular urban winter retreats are “anywhere that doesn’t require snow tires.”

Of Providence, Travel + Leisure wrote: “While some snowbirds flee during winter, this cultural hub has figured out ways to entice other people to stay—and visit. Its well-liked galleries host plenty of events, and restaurant week comes in January.” It also noted outdoor public ice skating at the Alex & Ani City Center rink.

Article author Katrina Brown Hunt said in previous years ski lover’s destinations such as Salt Lake City (No. 8) were top among readers’ preferences. Yet, with more snow predicted by The Farmers’ Almanac for New England and the Northeast, she said perennial snow-bird favorites like Miami (No. 7), Honolulu (No. 2) and Phoenix (No. 3 tied with Scottsdale, Ariz.) held onto top positions in the list.
