Tri-Town receives Tufts grant

WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Johnston-based Tri-Town Community Action Agency has received a $16,384 grant from the Tufts Health Plan Foundation to provide Matter of Balance classes to nearly 100 older adults.
The Foundation announced its second round of new funding for 2014 on Oct. 7. That funding totals more than $880,000 for 22 Massachusetts and Rhode Island-based organizations. Tri-Town is the only Rhode Island organization awarded a grant in this cycle, organizers said.
“We’re funding many new and exciting programs this cycle, along with programs that have consistently delivered positive outcomes in communities,” said Nora Moreno Cargie, executive director of the Foundation and vice president of corporate citizenship for Tufts Health Plan. “We applaud the work these organizations are doing to build communities that work for everyone, but especially older adults.”
An evidence-based fall prevention program, Matter of Balance helps older adults gain strength and mobility and reduce their fear of falling and injury. The class will be offered in eight different sessions at local senior centers in North Central and Northwestern Rhode Island.
The Tufts Health Plan launched the Foundation in 2008, aiming to improve the health and wellness of the diverse communities served. Through its community investments, the foundation has given approximately $16 million to Massachusetts and Rhode Island nonprofits that improve healthy living with a focus on healthy aging.
