PROVIDENCE – The General Assembly has named the Trinity Repertory Co. the state theater of Rhode Island in honor of its 50th anniversary, the theater company announced Tuesday afternoon.
Trinity Rep leaders received the honor at the Statehouse after the passage of a General Assembly joint resolution introduced by House Speaker Gordon D. Fox, and R.I. Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, both democrats
Trinity Rep was founded in 1963 in the Trinity United Methodist Church but has since expanded to mount 62 world premieres and annually stage works for about 145,000 theatergoers. It won a Tony Award in 1981, and it now houses the country’s only remaining permanent resident acting company.
The bill urged local residents to attend Trinity Rep productions and also recognized the economic impact of the theater company, which has more than 100 employees and creates almost $12 million of economic activity each year.
“It is an honor to join only a handful of theaters nationwide that have been named their state’s theater,” Artistic Director Curt Columbus said in a statement. “While we have been recognized nationally for our work, it is doubly special to be honored by one’s own home state.”
