Trust donates $100K to RIC’s Lema-Fernandes Portuguese Study Abroad Fund

The John A. Lema Jr. Charitable Trust donated $100,000 to Rhode Island College’s Lema-Fernandes Portuguese Study Abroad Fund on Sunday.
RIC President Nancy Carriuolo accepted the gift from two trustees, Judge Robert Silva and Dr. Anthony Caputi, during a tribute to the late John A. Lema Jr. at the Centro Comunitario Amigos da Terceira in Pawtucket. The tribute was followed by a program of cultural entertainment of the Portuguese-speaking world.
The Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies hosted the event in recognition of Lema’s support of Portuguese Studies at the college. Following Lema’s passing in 2014, RIC renamed its Portuguese Study Abroad Fund in his honor.
First established by the J.B. Fernandes Memorial Trust I, the study abroad fund honors Lema’s commitment to supporting the study of the Portuguese language and culture and his passion for sharing his love of Portugal through travel.
The endowment fund will assist students planning studies and internships abroad in Portuguese-speaking countries.
All proceeds at the event will benefit the fund.
