WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Tufts Health Plan Foundation has awarded more than $1.6 million in grants to 43 nonprofit organizations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island that focus on health aging.

Five of the 43 nonprofits are located in Rhode Island and received funding for projects to improve resources for older adults, enhance fitness programs with tai chi and yoga, develop nutritional education and meal support for older adults, improve health education and teach fall-prevention strategies.

“We’re proud of our partnerships in community and recognize that we don’t do this work alone,” said Nora Moreno Cargie, executive director of the Tufts Health Plan Foundation and vice president of corporate citizenship for Tufts Health Plan. “These grantees rose to the top of a competitive process, and we applaud them for the great work they do to support healthy living as people age.”

The Rhode Island nonprofits receiving funding include:

  • Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers in Providence ($10,000)

  • Hope Alzheimer’s Center in Cranston ($10,000)

  • Rhode Island Community Food Bank in Providence ($10,000)

  • Rhode Island Free Clinic Inc. in Providence ($61,000)

  • Westbay Community Action Inc. in Warwick ($42,000)

This round of grants represents the Tufts Health Plan Foundation’s first cycle of funding for 2014. For a full list of grant recipients, visit www.tuftshealthplanfoundation.org
