Turbine builders intend to use New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD – All three offshore wind developers competing to build turbines south of Martha’s Vineyard have expressed initial intent to base their operations in New Bedford, city and state officials announced Sept 6.

The preliminary agreements by Bay State Wind, Deepwater Wind and OffshoreMW are a significant step forward for the $113 million, state-funded Marine Commerce Terminal on the city’s southern coast, and for the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, which manages and operates it, according to a report by SouthCoast Today. The terminal was designed to serve as a staging area for offshore wind but has sat idle for several years and received criticism from state officials, including Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton. •
