Turbine freight comes to New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD – The MV Thorco Svendborg, the first customer for the $113 million Marine Commerce Terminal, arrived in the city harbor last week, The Standard-Times of New Bedford reported.

The 409-foot-long, Hong Kong-based cargo freighter is delivering turbine components for a land-based wind farm in Plymouth, Mass.

Government leaders said the ship’s arrival could represent not only the dawn of a new industry in New Bedford, but also the start of a new season for workers on the waterfront.

“This is the first summer ship we’ve had in 25 years,” Deputy Port Director Ed Anthes-Washburn told the newspaper.

New Bedford-based Maritime International will oversee the ship’s offloading at the terminal. Maritime International offloads all international cargo that comes into the port.

The components were made by Gamesa, a Spain-based company.
