Tweedie shepherds change at JWU

Frank X. Tweedie joined Johnson & Wales University as the director of technology practicum and adjunct professor in the School of Technology in 1993. In 1999, he was appointed chairperson of the engineering department. As department chair he also served as the interim director of the Worcester campus and led a successful consolidation of that campus and the Providence campus.

In 2004, Tweedie assumed his current role as dean of the renamed School of Engineering & Design. He has since overseen a series of changes, including plans for a $40 million academic center on former Interstate 195 land that will serve as the new home of the engineering and design school and a biology program. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on April 22.

How has the School of Engineering & Design grown?

The Feinstein Technology & Design Center was established in 2006 to empower students to apply their skills in a unique experiential education model, with the end result of helping the nonprofit community. In 2013, we opened our Center for Innovation & Design. This innovation center supports student originality and is a place where students can apply their knowledge and become confident in their abilities.

What role will the new building play in shaping instructional opportunities?

The new academic center will incorporate flexible classroom designs, student collaborative areas and learning through mobile-access technologies and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) methods. We now will have the space to incorporate this style of learning that we currently don’t have. It’s a new way of teaching and learning using technology.

What makes JWU’s School of Engineering & Design stand out from competing programs?

What sets us apart is our dedication in providing students with knowledge, guided by applying themselves through a robust experiential education model. This can be learned in a classroom, on project teams, in a technology or innovation center, or on an internship. Our end goal is giving our students the foundation that will set them up for success in their first job and beyond. •
