NORTH DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth aims to gain recognition as a top national research university as part of its strategic plan, UMassDTransform 2020.
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman outlined the plan at Tuesday morning’s 2014 Convocation Breakfast.
“UMass Dartmouth is the only research university in Massachusetts located south of Boston,” said Grossman. “We are the hub of innovation for an entire region. We have an obligation to be the best we can be, and that means achieving formal Doctoral Research University status. Our region needs and deserves a DRU.”
That status would likely lead to recognition by the state, the university’s peers, the country and “by all who have a stake in the economic, cultural and social prosperity of our community,” she said.
The strategic plan recommends four key actions through the year 2020 to get to that level of research status: focusing on “transformative” educational experience for students; embracing change that fosters “impactful research”; continuing to engage in reciprocal partnerships with the surrounding community; and serving as a catalyst for growth in the fields of environment, health, justice, arts and culture, she said.
