UMass Dartmouth raises $5.2M, exceeding goal

DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has raised $5.2 million, exceeding its $5 million goal for the year in the third quarter, ahead of schedule.
The second quarter of UMass Dartmouth’s fiscal year ended March 31. The fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.
“The gifts, some of which come from alumni whose lives were transformed by UMass Dartmouth, and others given by members of our community, are all powerful statements of trust in the abilities of our faculty and staff to help individuals and communities reach their potential,” Grossman said in a prepared statement. “And the best news is, we’re just getting started.”
The top giver was an anonymous donor who provided a $1.14 million gift to honor Rev. Robert P. Lawrence, pastor emeritus and previously senior minister of the First Congregational Church in Fall River. The gift will be used to institute civic engagement-related programs to recognize Lawrence, who has inspired the SouthCoast civic community for more than six decades, the school said.
“On behalf of our students, who are working so hard to learn and discover, I want to thank all of our donors for their generosity, which has far exceeded our expectations,” said UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman, who is completing her second year in the position.
Vice Chancellor for Advancement Lee Williams, who joined the yniversity last fall, praised the “deep commitment” of the region and UMass Dartmouth alumni to the university.
“Many of the donors I have spoken to see themselves in our students and want to do what they can to create new learning, discovery and engagement opportunities,” he said.
Fundraising for the year is wrapping up as the UMass Dartmouth campus prepares to unveil its strategic plan, “UMassDTransform2020.” The plan is intended to map the next phase of UMass Dartmouth’s continuing evolution, the school said.
