UMass among top 5 regional law schools for black students

DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Law earned a place among the top five law schools in the region for black students in the Lawyers of Color Black Student’s Guide to Law Schools 2014.

The Lawyers of Color selection committee evaluated each law school’s admission standards, cost, black student population and regional legal job market in awarding the top designations.

The UMass School of Law, established in 2010, is the only public law school in Massachusetts.

“UMass Law has a special responsibility to create access to law school and to enroll a diverse student body,” said Mary Lu Bilek, dean of the UMass law school, in a statement Wednesday. “We embrace that responsibility because we know that diversity increases the value of our educational program, creates a community that welcomes students from underrepresented communities in the profession, and increases the possibility that our laws will reflect the constitutional values of fairness and equality.”
