URI GSO scientists to present research at 2016 Ocean Sciences Meeting

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Scientists at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography will present their research at the 2016 Ocean Sciences Meeting in New Orleans Feb. 24 to 26.
“This is the premier meeting of the oceanography community in the country,” GSO Associate Dean David Smith said in a statement. “It gives our students a chance to showcase what they’re working on, and also helps them plan their next career step.’’
Through sessions and programs offered throughout the duration of the meeting, oceanographers and students will not only present their findings, but also network with colleagues for future projects and employment opportunities.
Some of the topics that GSO students will be discussing at this meeting include: ocean temperatures, sea levels at coastal parks, and wave and hurricane intensities.
Dwight Coleman and Gail Scowcroft, director and associate director, respectively, of the GSO’s Inner Space Center, will speak. Coleman will discuss why it is important to bring live broadcasts of the voyages of URI’s research vessel, “Endeavor,” to the public, and Scowcroft will discuss how to improve ocean science education at elementary and high schools.

“This meeting is an incredible opportunity for students,” Scowcroft said. “They are often the first to be exposed to recent research and they get to practice in communicating their one research. Both are equal in importance.”
GSO Dean Bruce Corliss will host a reception in New Orleans during the meeting to allow students and alumni from GSO to connect with each other and celebrate the university’s achievements.
“In addition to learning about the latest research, the Ocean Sciences Meeting provides a great opportunity to talk with our peers at other oceanographic institutions, as well as a chance to reestablish connections with our alumni,” Corliss said in a prepared statement.
The Ocean Sciences Meeting is sponsored by the American Geophysical Union, the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography and the Oceanography Society.
