URI professor refutes Gulf Stream claims

NARRAGANSETT – A professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography is refuting claims that climate change is slowing the pace of the Gulf Stream.
Citing recent studies that say the Gulf Stream is decreasing in strength as a result of rising sea levels along the East Coast, URI professor H. Thomas Rossby said that the research does not include any direct measurements of the current over an extended period to prove their point.
Rossby and researchers from Stony Brook University in New York recently published a paper in the journal Geophysical Research Letters that they said reinforced earlier findings about the stability of Gulf Stream transport based on observations from as far back as the 1930s.
The URI professor, who has spent much of his career studying ocean circulation, said the findings were based on readings from an acoustic Doppler current profiler attached to a freight ship that makes weekly trips across the Gulf Stream from New Jersey to Bermuda. •
