SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island raised $3,571 to fund the Rhody the Ram Endowment at this year’s annual Rhody the Ram Yard Sale during which the university also collected thousands of pounds of food and clothing to donate to local charities.
The endowment provides scholarships for students who don the Rhody the Ram mascot costume at sports, alumni, and university-related events.
“The mascot is very important. They’re the face of the university,” said Gerri Beagle, human resources manager of the URI Foundation who founded the yard sale, in a statement.
The June 9 event was the ninth annual yard sale.
All unsold items at the yard sale were donated to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Rhode Island.
Volunteers collected 2,000 pounds of clothing and 1,100 pounds of food from soliciting donations from all 22 campus dormitories. Those items were donated to the Jonnycake Center, a Wakefield nonprofit that works to eliminate hunger in its community.
The Rhody the Ram endowment has a market value of over $40,000. The interest is awarded to students who serve as mascots who are at least sophomores and in good academic standing.
