URI to host cybersecurity symposium

The symposium, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes a networking continental breakfast, lunch and after-symposium networking and is slated to highlight the latest research, collaboration and developments among federal, state, industry and academia expert in the field of cybersecurity.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – On Thursday, May 2, the University of Rhode Island will play host to lawmakers, researchers and other experts for a workforce development symposium designed to prepare the next generation for a future in cybersecurity.

The symposium, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes a networking continental breakfast, lunch and after-symposium networking and is slated to highlight the latest research, collaboration and developments among federal, state, industry and academia expert in the field of cybersecurity.

The networking will start at 8:30 a.m. in URI’s Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences in the Ryan Auditorium at 120 Flagg Rd.

At 10 a.m., URI President David M. Dooley will present opening remarks, along with Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, Reps. James R. Langevin and David Cicillini and URI Vice President for Research and Economic Development Peter Alfonso.

Scheduled keynote speakers include: Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency; Teresa Takai, chief information officer for the U.S. department of Defense; and Major Gen. Suzanne M. Vautrinot, commander of the 24th Air Force and Air Forces Cyber.

Panelists include: Scott Baron, director of digital risk & security governance for National Grid; Kelly Prevett, director of IT security operations for CVS Caremark Corp.; Jeffery Schilling, director of incident response for Dell SecureWorks; Retired Brigadier Gen. Bernard Skoch, CyberPatriot commissioner for High School Cyber Challenges, U.S. Air Force; Stephan Somogyi, product manager at Google; Johan Uvin, deputy assistant secretary for the Department of Education; Marisa Viveros, vice president of cyber security innovation for IBM; and Mike West, vice president of cyber investigations for Fidelity Investments.
