CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Business Journals has ranked 484 U.S. public colleges to determine the best in the United States, and the University of Rhode Island comes in at No. 153, with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, No. 236.
Rhode Island College also made the list, but because it landed in the “lower echelon” – the bottom 252 to 484 schools – it is unranked.
The top five public colleges, according to The Business Journals, a division of American City Business Journals, are: University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, University of Virginia, College of William and Mary in Virginia, and University of California at Berkeley.
Top-rated University of Michigan, with its 27,316 full-time undergraduates, received five stars in five of the six rating categories: selectivity, advancement, prestige, diversity and community. It received a four-star rating in cost.
URI with 11,829 undergraduates, has a prestige rating of one out of five stars. It also received a one-star in cost, but its diversity rating was a five. SAT reading scores range from 480 to 580, and SAT math scores, 490 to 590. In-state tuition and fees from 2013 to 2014 were $12,450, with on-campus room and board, $11,586.
UMass Dartmouth, with 6,373 full-time undergraduates, has a prestige rating of three stars out of five; its cost rating was one star. Its diversity rating was two out of five stars. SAT reading scores range from 470 to 570, with SAT math scores, from 490 to 590. In-state tuition and fees for 2013-2014 were $11,681, with on-campus room and board at $10,908.
According to The Business Journals, the study’s goal was to identify public universities and colleges that offer the best educational experiences to their students.
Highest marks went to schools with highly selective admissions processes, strong retention and graduation rates, prestigious reputations, affordable tuitions and housing costs, diverse faculties and student bodies, and economically robust communities, the study states.
