Ugandan playwright earns Brown fellowship

Posted 10/14/13

PROVIDENCE – Ugandan playwright George Seremba has been named recipient of Brown University’s 2013-14 International Writers Project Fellowship.

The fellowship provides a stipend and working space to writers who have been subjected to political harassment, imprisonment, or death threats in their homeland.

According to Erik Ehn, director of the International Writers Project, “IWP provides writers at risk time to write and engagement with our community of faculty and students, sharing fellowship across the school and beyond through festivals, performances and special presentations.”

Seremba was forced to flee Uganda in 1980 after he survived a botched attempt on his life by Milton Obote’s military intelligence (‘G’ Branch). After leaving Uganda, he moved first to Kenya, then to Canada, and later to Dublin. Since leaving Uganda, he has had an extensive career as a playwright and performer. He is the author of three full-length plays, “The Grave Will Decide,” “Come Good Rain,” and “Napoleon of the Nile,” as well as poems and radio plays. An accomplished actor, he has performed in feature films, on television and on the stage.

Seremba was previously in residence at Brown in August and September, 2010, as IWP visiting playwright. He will be in residence as IWP fellow for the 2013-14 academic year. •
