WESTERLY – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded its 2012 Regional EPA Wastewater Treatment Plant Excellence Award to United Water for its “outstanding operations and management” of the Westerly-based wastewater treatment plant, United Water announced Tuesday.

The plant was nominated for the award by the R.I. Department of Environmental Management in order to recognize the hard work of the United Water staff, project manager Scott Duerr and Paul Corina, utilities superintendent for the town of Westerly.

“We are grateful to the EPA and RIDEM for acknowledging the work we’ve done for the people of Rhode Island,” Bertrand Camus, CEO of United Water, said in prepared remarks. “We are proud of our people, our performance and the reputation that we have worked so hard to achieve over the 140 years that we have been in business.”

According to a United Water release, the Westerly plant can treat up to 3.3 million gallons of wastewater each day and serves a population of 23,000.

“The Town of Westerly and United Water are good partners, and that partnership continues to benefit the residents and businesses here,” Steven T. Hartford, Westerly’s town manager, said in a statement. “We’re grateful to RIDEM and the EPA for acknowledging the hard work of the Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant.”

The Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant has received awards in the past; including the 2009 Narragansett Water Pollution Control Association award for most efficient small advanced wastewater treatment facility, the 2006 NWPCA Safety Award and the NWPCA’s 2003 most improved plant in water pollution control.

United Water, which is a subsidiary of Suez Environment, also operates the East Providence-based Bucklin Point Wastewater Treatment Facility.
