United Way provides $524.6K to Hasbro summer programs

PROVIDENCE – United Way of Rhode Island has invested $524,600 in 14 local summer programs in preparation for the return of the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative, a collaboration with Hasbro Inc.

Entering its fifth year, HSLI programs are designed to avoid a “summer learning loss” experienced when children are out of the classroom for long periods of time. The six-week-long model features hands-on learning experiences in real-world applications and is geared toward keeping students engaged during summer vacation.

Anthony Maione, president and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island, said the initiative changes students’ perspectives on learning.

“This is a unique effort that is not summer camp or summer school – it fits in the middle by offering students exciting hands-on, educational activities that make them better prepared to learn new material when school reconvenes in September,” he said.
