PROVIDENCE – UnitedHealthcare of New England Inc. has been named the new title sponsor for the UnitedHealthcare Newport Marathon, taking over for Lincoln-based Amica Mutual Insurance Co., which held the title sponsorship position since 2009.
In 2011, Amica signed on for a five-year contract with the marathon and spokesperson Vince Burks told Providence Business News that the choice to drop the sponsorship was a “business decision.”
“We are constantly switching up our sponsorships, and we try new things from time to time,” said Burks, adding that there was no backlash for dropping the sponsorship.
When asked where Amica decided to redirect its sponsorship funds, Burks said “When we look at our sponsorships, we look at it from the entire country. It’s not that we’re doing another large sponsorship in Rhode Island that replaced it, but I’m sure there are other sponsorships elsewhere in the country.”
The newly titled UnitedHealthcare Newport Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 13 in Newport.
The race weekend will feature the UnitedHealthcare 5K on Saturday, Oct. 12 and the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon and Marathon on Oct. 13.
“Running is a great way for Rhode Islanders to become healthy, and UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to support the Newport Marathon to help raise awareness of the important health benefits of physical activity and regular exercise,” UnitedHealthcare of New England CEO Stephen Farrell said in prepared remarks.
