VA celebrates medical research

PROVIDENCE – The Providence VA Medical Center highlighted medical advancements and VA research during Research Day on the afternoon of May 20 in the Providence VA Medical Center fifth-floor classrooms.

“VA research benefits both veterans and the progress of medical science nationwide,” Dr. Gaurav Choudhary, chief of research at the Providence VA Medical Center, said in a statement issued before the event. “The Providence VA Medical Center is host to 240 different research projects in many cutting-edge areas of research, including neurotechnology, prosthetics, posttraumatic stress, health services, heart and lung diseases, genomics and alternative pain management.”

As part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National VA Research Week celebration, Research Day at the Providence VA Medical Center featured guest speakers, including U.S. Sen. Jack F. Reed, U.S. Rep. James Langevin, U.S. Rep. David Cicilline and Dr. Patricia Dorn, director of the Veterans Health Administration’s Rehabilitation Research Service. There were poster presentations on many research projects after the speaking program.

“Research is a critical component of our commitment to provide veterans with the exceptional health care they’ve earned though their service and sacrifice, both today and in the future,” Dr. Susan MacKenzie, director of the Providence VA Medical Center, said before the event. The VA had invited veterans, their families and supporters to attend the program to learn about the achievements of VA researchers and the important roles they play in advancing medical science, she said.
