PROVIDENCE – Verizon Wireless and AT&T were rated the best in Rhode Island for overall network performance among the four major wireless carriers during the second half of 2014, according to the third National RootScore Report from RootMetrics in Seattle.

The two companies had similar ratings of 97, and 96.4, out of a 100-point scale, respectively. Sprint’s score was 91.8, and T-Mobile, 91.3.

Results in Rhode Island were based on 28,603 tests, which included driving 1,560 miles and testing 28 indoor locations.

Verizon’s reliability and call performance in Rhode Island were considered the best among the four carriers. Verizon also shared with AT&T the highest score for data performance.

As for text performance, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile tied for the top spot, while Verizon came in last.

Each RootScore was calculated through a series of tests designed to reflect the impact that a consumer would experience, the organization said.

“Network quality and reliability matters,” Dave MacBeth, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless, said in a statement. “Although it’s certainly an honor to receive independent validation of Verizon Wireless’ network leadership in Rhode Island and across New England, as professional network engineers we are never satisfied. We’ve reinvested nearly $4 billion into our wireless network across New England since 2000, including $378 million in 2014, to continuously enhance the wireless experience for customers who depend on their mobile devices and smart accessories staying connected today, and to build the infrastructure that will support the advanced services of tomorrow.”

Verizon Wireless placed first in national, state and metro categories for overall mobile performance

AT&T was second in the categories, with T-Mobile and Sprint coming in at the bottom.

RootMetrics said Verizon was the winner of the overall RootScore award for the third consecutive year for excelling in all types of environments – dense urban conditions and medium- and small-sized towns to rural areas. Its score was 93.9 for rating well on call, data, reliability, text and speed performance.

In comparison, AT&T’s score was 91.7; Sprint, 86.6; and T-Mobile, 84.
