Verizon donates to domestic violence agencies

PROVIDENCE – Verizon Wireless recently donated a total of $30,000 to Rhode Island-based domestic violence agencies through its HopeLine grant program.
Recipients of the $10,000 grants include the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center, Sojourner House and the Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center.
The donations were presented at the Verizon Wireless Smart Store located at 399 Bald Hill Road in Warwick and the Verizon Wireless Store located in Providence Place Mall.
The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center will use the grant to support its “After Hours Advocacy Program,” making shelter staff available to residents during evenings and weekends.
The donation to Sojourner House will help fund the cost of the agency’s domestic violence residential program, helping survivors and their families live independently.
The Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center will use its grant to continue to provide services to survivors and help meet the needs of the local community.
“Donating a no-longer used cell phone through Verizon’s HopeLine program is an easy and effective way to support domestic violence agencies right here in Rhode Island,” said Michael Murphy, public relations manager for Verizon Wireless.
“Thanks to the phones and accessories collected through HopeLine, Verizon is able to award cash grants to our local agency partners,” he added. “With support from our customers here in the community, we are proud to be working alongside these agency partners to raise awareness of this important issue and to give survivors a lifeline to help in an emergency.”
For more than a decade, Verizon has worked to help end domestic violence. Through its various business units and philanthropic foundation, the company has donated more than $29 million in grants to domestic violence organizations and shelters since 2001.
Since 2001, HopeLine has collected more than 10.8 million phones, properly disposed of 2.4 million no-longer-used wireless phones, and donated 180,000 HopeLine phones with free airtime to domestic violence organizations nationwide.
