Veterans’ scholarship at PC supported by alumni gift

PROVIDENCE – In January, Providence College received a $50,000 gift from Col. Noel J. Doyle Jr., ’58, a 30-year Army veteran who served two tours in Vietnam, and his wife, in support of a new scholarship for veterans who attend the college’s School of Continuing Education.

SCE dean Janet Castleman said the school is “overwhelmed” by the Doyles’ support.

“The SCE Military Service Scholarship Fund is by far the largest donation SCE has ever received. Their gift will help veterans whose needs may exceed their VA educational benefits or whose benefits may have run out. This wonderful new scholarship will allow SCE to give back to those who have given so much to their country,” she added.

Students eligible for the scholarship must be honorably discharged military veterans or their dependents. The SCE scholarship will cover any costs not paid by Veterans Affairs education benefits and special priority will be given to veterans of Middle Eastern combat zones, with priority given to Afghanistan and Iraq veterans.

GI Jobs magazine has categorized PC as a “military-friendly” school for eight consecutive years. The school is home to the Patriot Battalion of the Army ROTC, which brings together 100 cadets from PC, Bryant University, Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Rhode Island College, University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and the Community College of Rhode Island.
