WESTERLY – The Westerly Community Credit Union this past week donated proceeds from the 31st annual Holiday Basketball Tournament to four sports booster programs.
Checks for $2,332.75 each went to Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, and Westerly High School Sports Boosters in Rhode Island as well as Stonington High sports boosters in Connecticut.
The credit union awarded the funds based on the basketball teams’ hard work, determination and participation in the tournament.
“WCCU has always been a very community-oriented institution,” stated Steve White, credit union president and CEO. “We couldn’t be happier being the sole sponsor of this event for the past 31 years and raising money to help our communities’ young adults.”
The 2014 tournament, held Dec. 26, 27, 29 and 30, raised a total of $9,331. As the sole sponsor of the tournament, the credit union divides all of the entry fees between the sports boosters of the participating schools.
The event has raised more than $193,901 since it originated in 1984.
