WCCU to give $4,500 in scholarships to local schools

WESTERLY – Three college scholarships and one vocational scholarship, totaling $4,500, for students in local high schools will be funded by the Westerly Community Credit Union for the 2016-17 school year.

Qualifying schools are: Chariho High School in Richmond, Exeter-West Greenwich Regional High School, Narragansett High School, Prout School in South Kingstown, South Kingstown High School, Westerly High School, Wheeler High School in Providence and Stonington High School in Pawcatuck, Conn.

The Joseph N. Cugini Scholarship, Robert M. Bewlay Memorial Scholarship and Westerly Community Credit Union College Scholarship are one-time awards of $1,000 each and will be granted to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a two- or four-year college or university upon graduation.

Also a one-time award of $1,000, the Westerly Community Credit Union Vocational Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who plans to attend a locally recognized vocation-credentialed certificate program after graduation.

An additional $500 scholarship, part of the Cooperative Credit Union Association College Scholarship Program, will be awarded to one of the top three applicants to the Cooperative Credit Union. Applicants are measured by their academic performance, financial need and the quality of their application essay.

Applications for all scholarships are available at any Westerly Community Credit Union branch, the website and in the guidance departments of local high schools.

The deadline for applying for WCCU scholarships is March 10.
