WPRI named news station of the year

THE ASSOCIATED Press named WPRI-TV CBS 12 station of the year for the ninth consecutive year in its annual Massachusetts/Rhode Island television and radio contest. Four other local broadcasters were also honored.

PROVIDENCE – The Associated Press named WPRI-TV CBS 12 the news station of the year for the ninth consecutive year in its annual Massachusetts/Rhode Island television and radio contest.

“Receiving the News Station of the Year award is a tremendous testament to the hard work of the entire Eyewitness News team and our Digital team,” Jay Howell, WPRI-TV CBS 12 President and General Manager, said in prepared remarks.

“To be recognized in this way for nine consecutive years is really amazing,” said news director Joe Abouzeid. “Honors like this only serve to energize our news team to work harder than anyone else to bring the viewers of Southern New England the best news coverage every day.”

In addition to the News Station of the Year award, WPRI received accolades for both its feature reporting and its investigative reporting. The station’s feature Street Stories: Twisted Talent caught the eye of the judges, as did the Target 12 Investigators’ report “Feel the Burn.”

Rhode Island broadcasters WPRO-AM 630, WWBB-FM 101.5, WHJJ-AM 920 and WBRU-FM 95.5 were also honored by the news organization.

WPRO-AM 630 landed recognition for its breaking news coverage of Hurricane Irene and the Rhode Island pension crisis as well as investigative reporting from the Hummel Report.

Both the WPRI website – – and the WPRO website – – were honored.

WHJJ-AM 920 was recognized for exemplary talk show with The Helen Glover Show.

The Brown University radio station WBRU-FM 95.5 was recognized for its continuing coverage of Occupy Providence.

WWBB-FM 101.5, B101 was recognized in the public affairs category for its Rhode Island Community Foodbank radiothon.

The awards were handed out at an awards ceremony on Friday, May 18 at the Newton, Mass., Marriot Hotel.
