PROVIDENCE – Furthering its campaign to get people riding bikes and keep unused cycles out of the river, the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council is opening the Red Shed Bike Shop, which will provide low-cost bikes and repairs, rentals and a summer camp for area youth.

Alicia Lehrer, WRWC executive director, said she is excited for the 2016 opening: “Everybody loves the Red Shed and the neighborhood looks forward to the opening each season.”

She explained that purchasing a bike from the shop could help send a local child to the organization’s summer camp. Located in Riverside Park at 50 Aleppo St. in the heart of the Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Greenway, the shop will start its summer camp on June 27 with campers from all across Rhode Island. Campers ages 8 to 14 will bike every day while learning maintenance and repair skills and safety procedures. During their session each camper will receive a free bike, lock and helmet to keep.
Scholarships for area youth are available and can be applied for with Donny Green, the camp’s director, who can be reached at 469-708-9792.

WRWC is also looking for individuals and businesses who would be interested in donating toward the scholarship fund.
