PROVIDENCE – WalletHub ranked cities with the most and least efficient spending on education, and Providence ranked near the bottom of the list at No. 79.
WalletHub, a personal finance website, ranked the 90 most populated U.S. cities.

Providence ranked 79th on adjusted return on educational investment. For average standardized test scores, the city ranked No. 82, and No. 84 for education expenditures per capita (not per student) at $2,215.
When return on educational investment is not adjusted, Providence’s rank falls even lower, to No. 85.
To come up with the ranking, WalletHub divided each city’s aggregated standardized test scores in reading and math for grades 4 and 8 by its total education spending per capita. The data was then adjusted using four socioeconomic factors: poverty rate, median household income, single-parent families and percentage of households that do not speak English as their first language.

No. 1 on the list was Miami, Fla., for a combination of average standardized test scores (No. 47) and education expenditures per capita at $1,234 (No. 8). When ROI is not adjusted, Miami’s rank drops to No. 16.
Second place was Grand Rapids, Mich., where average standardized test scores ranked No. 10, and education expenditures per capita was $1,237 (No. 9). Unadjusted, this city ranks No. 1 on the list.
Last place was Rochester, N.Y., where average standardized test scores also ranked at the bottom, and its spending at $3,176, No. 89. Even when the data is unadjusted, the city still ranked last.
