PROVIDENCE – One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is “to get a better job,” according to WalletHub, but apparently Providence isn’t the best place to look for one.

The personal finance website said that Providence is the fifth-worst city in the nation to find a job.

WalletHub studied the 150 most populated cities in the country. To come up with its findings, WalletHub looked at job market (including unemployment rate, industry variety, full-time employment, percentage of employed residents living under the poverty line and disability friendliness) and socioeconomic environment (including median annual income, housing affordability, benefits and annual transportation costs).

California cities took three of the bottom four spots – Stockton was last, Fresno was second to last and Modesto was fourth. Detroit was third worst on the list.

Plano, Texas, ranked as the best city to find a job in the new year. Boston ranked 49th on the list – the highest ranked city in New England.

Providence was singled out as one of the top five cities in the category of shortest time spent working and commuting, coming in fifth after Tallahassee, Fla.; Springfield, Mo.; and Madison, Wis.; and Grand Rapids, Mich.

While Providence ranked above average in the job opportunities subcategory at 66th, it ranked low for unemployment rate (142nd) and median annual income adjusted for cost of living (145th).
