PROVIDENCE – Providence is 2016’s worst city to retire, according to WalletHub’s latest study released Monday.
WalletHub is a personal finance website that compared the affordability, quality of life, health care and availability of recreational activities in the 150 largest U.S. cities to come up with its list. It looked at 31 key metrics ranging from cost of living and public hospital rankings to percentage of the population that’s 65 and older.
Providence, with its overall rank of 150, did not fare well in subcategories of affordability, where it placed 145th, and health care, where it placed 148th. Rhode Island’s capital city performed better in the activities subcategory, placing 88th, and quality of life subcategory, 119th.
Providence also ranked low in the worst mild weather ranking, coming in 148th, above only Rochester and Buffalo in New York.
The best place to retire?
It should come as no surprise that Florida dominated the top five, as well as the top spot overall. Orlando was named the best city to retire, followed by another Florida city – Tampa. Scottsdale, Ariz., took the third spot, and Miami, the fourth. Sioux Falls, S.D., was fifth.
Closer to home, Worcester, Mass., ranked 149th overall, and Boston, 92nd.
