PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is the 13th best state for working dads, according to WalletHub.

The personal finance website analyzed the best and worst states for working fathers given that Father’s Day is Sunday. It also included the District of Columbia in the rankings.

It said that 93 percent of dads with children younger than 18 were in the labor force in 2014, citing the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Male parenting is not what it once was,” WalletHub states on its website. “Today, 60 percent of family households depend on two incomes. And the contemporary dad no longer fits neatly into the standard of the married male breadwinner and disciplinarian.”
To come up with the list, WalletHub looked at such things as economic and social well-being, health, work-life balance and child care.

Rhode Island scored the best in the work-life balance and health categories, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. It ranked 29th in child care and 28th in economic and social well-being.

Rhode Island also tied for third place with California for lowest average hours worked per day among males , behind only Oregon and Delaware.

The top 10 states for working dads in order are: Minnesota, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey, Virginia, Wisconsin, Maryland, Utah and Connecticut.

The worst state for working dads is Mississippi.
