PROVIDENCE – WalletHub has ranked Rhode Island 21st on its list of the “most and least educated states” in the U.S.

The personal finance website released the list Tuesday.

WalletHub’s website says its analysts “examined the key determinants of a well-educated population: educational attainment, school quality and achievement gaps between genders and races” in compiling the list.

The website’s analysts compared the states across 11 total metrics grouped by category. Data sets ranged from “percentage of adults aged 25 and older with at least a high school diploma” to “average university quality.”

Rhode Island ranked 23rd in the “educational attainment” category and fifth in the “quality of education and attainment gap” category.

WalletHub says its analysts found that the most educated states are Massachusetts, Maryland, Colorado, Connecticut and Vermont, respectively. The least educated states, in order, are West Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Kentucky.
