PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is one of the most energy-efficient states in the nation, according to the latest study by personal finance website WalletHub.
The Ocean State ranked sixth on the list of 48 states. Due to data limitations, WalletHub excluded Hawaii and Alaska.
New York is the most energy-efficient state, followed by Vermont, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Utah. South Carolina ranked as the least energy-efficient state.
WalletHub said it compared the energy efficiency of car- and home-energy consumption in the states to “bring awareness to the impact of energy on Americans’ wallets” and to “encourage consumers to conserve more.”
October also is National Energy Awareness Month, and WalletHub said the average household spends approximately $2,000 annually on energy bills, nearly half of which pays for heating and cooling expenses.
When it comes to home energy efficiency and car energy efficiency, Rhode Island ranked 11th and 10th, respectively, in those categories.
To identify the most energy-efficient states, WalletHub said it calculated the ratio between total residential energy consumption and annual degree days from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center to figure out home energy efficiency, and also divided the annual vehicle miles driven by gasoline consumed to determine car energy efficiency.
Each dimension was weighted proportionally to reflect national consumption patterns, WalletHub said. States were scored between 0 and 100 points, 100 being the highest. Rhode Island’s overall score was 78.9
