PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is one of the top 10 safest states in the country to live in, according to WalletHub.
WalletHub measured everything from workplace safety and emergency preparedness to home and community stability and financial security to come up with the list. The personal-finance website also took into account climate disasters and road safety.
Rhode Island was eighth on the list, scoring high for workplace safety, where it placed first, and home and community safety, where it was sixth. In the road- safety subcategory, it scored 16th, and natural disasters, 17th.
Rhode Island also had the fifth-fewest occupational injuries per total employees, behind only Connecticut, Massachusetts, Hawaii and Washington.
It scored low in financial stability, 41st, and also was singled out for having one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. In April, Rhode Island’s jobless rate was 6.1 percent, ninth highest among the states and the District of Columbia, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Massachusetts was first on the list of safest states, followed by Vermont, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Utah and Connecticut. Virginia was ninth, and Maine, 10th. Mississippi was last.
