PROVIDENCE – Rep. Donna M. Walsh, D-Charlestown, has submitted legislation to boost Rhode Island’s arts community – and in turn, its economy – by extending Rhode Island’s existing tax-free art zones to include the entire state.

The proposed legislation – H 5844 – would eliminate the 7 percent sales tax for one of a kind, original works of art.

In a statement, Walsh said that foregoing this revenue is an “investment in creating more jobs in galleries and nonprofits, more opportunities for artists to devote more time to their work, and increased opportunities to expand our vitally important tourism industry.”

Walsh said she was inspired to introduce this legislation after several discussions with a constituent, David “Gilley” Gilstein, who runs the Charlestown Art Gallery. •
