PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Naval War College Museum in Newport was one of six university museums in the United States to make college ranking website Best Colleges Online’s list of the “30 Most Amazing University Museums,” the publication said Wednesday.
The Website compiled the international list based on qualities including: architecture, depth of resources and collections, and activity as a learning and teaching resource for the surrounding community.
According to Best Colleges Online’s report, the “collection at the U.S. Naval War College Museum highlights important events and developments in the science of war at sea, particularly the naval history of Narragansett Bay starting in the colonial era.”
The exhibits at the museum reportedly tie in with the curriculum of the college, and the building that houses the museum was originally the location of the Newport Asylum for the Poor. In 1884, the facility was converted to use as the U.S. Naval College and later designated as a museum.
The building is now in the registry of Historic Landmarks.
Joining the War College Museum on the list from the U.S. were: The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia; The Harvard Museum of Natural History in Cambridge, Mass.; The Lincoln Heritage Museum at Lincoln College in Lincoln, Ill.; The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, Calif.; and The University of Arizona Arts & Museums in Tucson, Ariz.
“The best university museums go far beyond displays and exhibits,” Best Colleges Online Editor Dan Jenkin said in prepared remarks. “They strive to be a dynamic cultural resource and hub for student, educator, and community involvement in the arts, anthropology, history and more.”
