The Washington Trust Co. recently presented $5,000 and more than 150 used cellphones to the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County on behalf of the Washington Trust Charitable Foundation.
The cellphones were donated by the community and bank employees through the bank’s annual cellphone recycling campaign. They are given to clients of the center to provide them a sense of security if they are put in an emergency situation.
Remaining phones from the drive are sent to a company that refurbishes them or scraps the phones for parts. The proceeds are then given to the center.
“Partnerships like we have with the [center] allow Washington Trust to give back to the community by supporting the very people who work tirelessly to offer safety, advocacy, education and critical services to those in need,” said Washington Trust President and Chief Operating Officer Edward O. “Ned” Handy, who presented the check to Mary Roda, the executive director of the center.
Washington Trust has donated more than $20,000 to the center since collection efforts began in 2001. •
