We Mean Business Expo set for Sept. 10

PROVIDENCE – Businesses will be able to discuss regulations affecting them with the government officials responsible for enforcing the laws and codes at the seventh annual We Mean Business Expo next month.
Attendees at the Sept. 10 event at the Crowne Plaza Providence-Warwick in Warwick will include Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis, representatives of the R.I. Economic Development Corporation and other state, federal and local officials.
Last year, Chafee used the event to announce plans for state departments and agencies to accelerate their evaluation of regulations for any adverse effects on small businesses, shrinking the evaluation period from four years to 480 days.
One of the early results of that review has been the identification of 12 rules recommended for elimination of the estimated 1,642 that small businesses in Rhode Island must comply with. Fifty-three more regulations were marked for amendment or cited as redundant.
This year, Mollis’ office says the event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include a new “smart start” room. Attorneys and accountants will use the room to speak with businesses and entrepreneurs on patents, trademarks, taxes and other issues.
Workshops will include a presentation by the state fire marshal’s office on the Rhode Island fire code.
