Wein a New Englander of the Year honoree

BOSTON – Newport Festivals Foundation Chairman George Wein is among the New England Council’s New Englander of the Year honorees this year.
According to the council, the awards are presented each year to honor New England residents for their commitment and contributions in their fields of work, as well as their leadership and impact on the region’s quality of life and economy.
Wein began his career in jazz as a pianist and bandleader in Boston. In 1950, he opened a small jazz club in a hotel called Storyville, and four years later, he founded the Newport Jazz Festival in Newport. The large, outdoor jazz festival has become an annual event at Fort Adams and has led to Wein producing other festivals, including the Newport Folk Festival.
This year’s other recipients are: Putnam Investments President and CEO Robert L. Reynolds, Feinberg Rozen Managing Partner Kenneth R. Feinberg, and U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H. •
