WESTPORT – Farmers will begin cutting trees and tearing up brush on a parcel on Route 6 that should be a slaughterhouse and meat market by the end of the year, according to a report by The Herald News of Fall River.
The Southeastern Massachusetts Livestock Association, or SEMALA, recently completed its purchase of a 10-acre parcel of land for the facility.
The plans are to build a 10,000-square-foot slaughterhouse with a small, attached retail store. It will provide local farmers with a USDA-licensed facility for processing livestock.
The last such local facility was in Dartmouth. It closed in 2007. The closest facility is now in Johnston. •
